About David

If you’re anything like me, you might have found yourself watching every gardening programme aired on TV and you’ve probably been glued to the broadcasts coming from the Chelsea Flower Show. ‘Garden envy’ is a real thing - and many of us suffer from it! Whilst we may not have a sizeable garden of our own, even a small corner plot can be transformed into a little patch of beauty. Or simply a little patch of therapy.

I consider myself fortunate to have a garden, though it’s not a particularly big one. The lockdown which has seen so many of us working from home in the last year has given me a little more time for my plants. Some photographs from the garden last summer are shown above, although I’m yet to design my small piece of West Sussex. As I write this my garden is at the start of what may be a long but hopefully productive journey.

Keeping my garden tidy and learning about the plants I have brings me a great deal of pleasure. In recent years I’ve accrued a good level of plant knowledge and am always happy to chat to local garden enthusiasts. Like most recreational gardeners, I’ve learned through trial and error.

I’m a life sciences graduate and I’ve always found the natural world absorbing. My love of flora has led me to explore the most beautiful formal gardens in West Sussex and nearby counties. My love of wildlife often sees me at a local beauty spot or nature reserve, camera in hand. My own garden inhabitants are constants in my life and are all firm friends, although I’d prefer it if my squirrels didn’t munch on the greenery quite so much!

A love of gardens ….

Like many of us, over the years I’ve weathered the rigours of a fast-paced profession and at times I’ve struggled to keep my head above water. With over two decades in IT project management I’ve come to appreciate the simple pleasures which offer even a small measure of escapism and respite.

Recently I’ve been able to reduce my working hours a little, and those spare hours are spent in my garden. I’m often battling poor soil and honey fungus, but tending something living and breathing gives me a sense of satisfaction which is hard to match.

I’m also a keen nature and wildlife photographer.

 F A Q

Do you offer gardening services?
No, I’m currently a recreational gardener and plant enthusiast. I’m in my mid-50s so career retirement isn’t far off - I plan to work in gardening then

Do you sell plants?
Not at the moment, but my friends and neighbours are often the beneficiaries of whichever specimens I over-cultivate each season

Do you have any plant related qualifications?
I have a degree in combined sciences, majoring in ecology and biology. I have good working knowledge of most British popular plants and cultivars

Where are you based?
I live in Storrington, in West Sussex

I’m a keen local gardener, can I get in touch with a question?
Yes, I’d love to touch bases with local plant enthusiasts. As yet, I don’t know as many local gardeners as I’d like to.

I won’t always know the answers, but it’s always good to chat and exchange ideas.
